Stephanie Roorda was born and raised in Calgary, Alberta. Her competitive athletic interests were sparked by downhill ski racing which ultimately lead her to cycling in 2004 as off-season ski training. Her love for speed, strategy and competition naturally lead to racing. In 2006 Steph relocated to the west coast of Canada to pursue her post secondary education and to train for bicycle racing. In 2008, from her base in British Columbia, Steph raced in a few US international races, finding success throughout the season. In 2009, at the tender age of 22, Steph was invited to join the New Zealand based Jazz Apple road cycling team (http://www.jazzapple.com/riders.htm). This remains one of the most influential periods in her cycling career. It was also the debut year of the Canadian Women’s Team Pursuit to World Track Cycling Cups. The Canadian team, consisting of Tara Whitten, Laura Brown and Steph Roorda, stepped onto the international stage, winning a gold and bronze in World Cup events.
Steph’s focus is clearly on track cycling. With the team, Steph has spent the 2010/2011 track season training in southern California and racing in the World Cup circuit with considerable success. Currently the Canadian Team Pursuit team is ranked 6th in the world. In the summer of 2011 Steph was road racing and training in Vancouver with Local Ride/Dr. Vie Superfoods+ and Cycling BC. Steph lives and trains in Vancouver and Los Angeles, in preparation of the forthcoming 2011/2012 World Cup season and ultimately the London Olympics in August 2012.
